Aurico Named No. 2 on HRO Today Magazine’s 2016 Baker’s Dozen List of Top Background Screening Providers

Aurico, a CareerBuilder company, announced it has been named one of the nation’s top 13 employment screening providers on HRO (Human Resource Outsourcing) Today magazine’s 2016 Baker’s Dozen list. This recognition marks the fifth appearance on the list for Aurico.

“At Aurico, nothing is more important to us than our clients. It is extremely gratifying to get confirmation from them that we are not just meeting, but exceeding their background screening needs,” said Ben Goldberg, CEO of Aurico. “We strive to provide our clients with the best user experience and the most compliant and accurate service. Having our customers acknowledge our commitment to trust for employers and applicants is an honor.”
To achieve inclusion on the Baker’s Dozen list, companies that provide background checks are rated anonymously by their clients during an online survey process. HRO Today calculates the results using a statistical analysis and predetermined algorithm. The award is based on three categories: breadth of service, size of deal and quality of service.

Workplace Drug Testing in Australia

¹Workplace drug testing gets a fair amount of media coverage, but there is a potentially far larger issue that employers need to be aware of – alcohol.

A survey conducted by the Australian Drug Foundation found that nearly one in five employees had performed work duties while drunk or tipsy.

A similar number admitted to pulling a sickie due to the effects of alcohol, while about 40% said they’d gone to work while still feeling the effects of their drinking.

According to the foundation, alcohol and other drugs cost Australian businesses $6 billion per year in lost productivity and absenteeism, with alcohol use contributing to five per cent of workplace deaths and 11 per cent of accidents.

Best Practices:
  • Employers should have a robust drug and alcohol policy
  • Establish a zero tolerance policy
  • Conduct pre-employment, random and post-accident testing
  • Train Managers on how to identify that someone is intoxicated.
²For employers who perform work on government construction sites, New guidelines were released by Industrial Relations Minister Robert Clark that require companies tendering for taxpayer-funded building projects worth more than $10 million to do a minimum number of drug and alcohol tests on employees.

International Background Screening

Aurico Hosts an International Webinar:  International Background Checks in the Global Work Place, presented by Brian S. Arbetter, ESQ. Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP

Aurico hosted an international webinar on best practices for international screening and the following five items are key areas clients should focus on when considering international screening:
  • Beware of a one size fits all solution-Each country has their own specific laws, culture and searches that are legally available.
  • Know the nature and purpose of the screening-what is available, what is the risk factor.
  • Obtain an appropriate consent before screening-there may be special forms based on the countries privacy and data protection laws.
  • Engage a competent service provider to work with your legal counsel.
  • Respect the integrity of local culture and law.

CANADA - Supreme Court Rules Against Random Alcohol Testing of Employees

Excerpted from EdmontonJournal.com

The Supreme Court of Canada says an employer who wants to impose random alcohol testing on unionized workers in a dangerous work environment must show it is a reasonable move.

The court ruled Friday that a mandatory random alcohol testing policy imposed by Irving Pulp and Paper at a Saint John, N.B., kraft mill in 2006 was unreasonable and was properly rejected by a labour arbitration board. In a 6-3 decision, the justices sided with the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada, which brought a grievance against the Irving policy.

International Law - The UK Proposed Legislation to Seal Certain Convictions

The UK has started the legislative process (subject to agreement by Parliament) so that certain old and minor cautions and convictions will no longer be disclosed on a DBS (disclosure and barring service, formally CRB criminal records bureau) certificate. This action is in response to the Court of Appeal judgment in January this year which stated that the disclosure of all cautions and convictions on a DBS Certificate was incompatible with Article 8 of the United Kingdom Convention for Human Rights.   The filtering rules which are now before parliament for consideration are:

International Services: What’s the Skinny on International Background Screening?

International background screening continues to expand at a rapid rate. For some organizations, screening is handled as a “one-off” for a single hire with an international background, while other organizations require comprehensive screening solutions on a global basis. Whichever category you fall into, partnering with a company versed in international screening is essential.
International complexities are significant and in most cases, there is no silver bullet to address the impact on time, cost and process variations. Here are six key topics to keep in mind when including international background screening in your HR process and policy.
